The Setup Reality Check

I promised the annoying parts, so here they are.

After two weekends, here’s where I landed.

Choose OpenClaw if you want an agent woven into your existing communication tools, you’re comfortable running things locally, and you value a privacy-first default. It’s the better fit if your goal is “automate my digital life without handing it to a third party.” The harness engineering mindset I wrote about earlier fits OpenClaw well — you’re building the environment the agent runs in.

Choose Hermes Agent if you’d rather the agent get genuinely better at repeated tasks over time, you don’t mind a cloud option, and you like the idea of skills accumulating. It’s the better fit if your work is repetitive and you want the agent to asymptotically approach “just handles it now.”

For me? I kept OpenClaw running. Not because Hermes is worse — it isn’t — but because local-first matched how I already work, and I’d rather own the stack than rent it. Your mileage will depend on whether reach or growth is the thing you’re missing.
